1. What Is 5083 Aluminum Plate?
5083 is a 5xxx-series aluminum-magnesium alloy. Magnesium is the main alloying element (4.0–4.9%), with manganese, chromium, and other elements. It is one of the strongest non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys, and it keeps its toughness at low temperature, which is why it is the standard choice for shipbuilding, marine structures, LNG tanks, and pressure vessels.
- 5083 is not heat-treatable. Unlike 6061, you can't age-harden it. Its strength comes from alloying and from cold or hot working (tempers).
- "5083" is the same alloy as "AlMg4.5Mn0.7" (EN 573) and 5A05/5A03 in GB (Chinese). 5083 is the US/AA designation; AlMg4.5Mn0.7 is the European name. Same chemistry, same metal.
GNEE is a 5083 aluminum plate supplier in China. We supply plate and sheet to ASTM B209 and ASTM B928, in O, H111, H112, H116, and H321 tempers. Send us your size and temper and we will quote.

3. Tempers Of 5083 aluminum
The tempers most often ordered for 5083 plate:
|
Temper |
What It Means |
Typical Use |
|
O |
Fully annealed, softest, best formability |
Deep-formed parts, cold bending, welding-heavy fabrication |
|
H111 |
Annealed + light strain hardening (e.g. from leveling) |
General plate where slight stiffness is wanted; common for 2–12 mm plate |
|
H112 |
As fabricated from hot rolling, strength from the rolling process |
Thicker plate (from about 6 mm up), structural work |
|
H116 |
Marine temper, good resistance to seawater and stress-corrosion cracking |
Ship hulls, marine structures |
|
H321 |
Marine temper, strain-hardened, similar resistance to H116 |
Shipbuilding, offshore, welded marine structures |
In ASTM B209, 5083-H111 has the same guaranteed properties as 5083-O. H111 only means the plate picked up a little strain hardening during flattening or leveling. Don't order H111 expecting a big strength jump over O.
H111 and H112 are not "marine grade" tempers. For ship and offshore work that must meet marine standards, the tempers are H116 and H321, and the standard to name is ASTM B928 (the marine-grade plate standard), not just B209. If your order says "marine grade 5083," add the standard and temper to make it clear.
Also: H112 under ASTM B209 only applies from about 6.3 mm up. You can't order 2 mm plate as H112 in B209 - use O or H111 for thin plate.

Read the table this way: strength drops as plate gets thicker, and marine tempers (H116/H321) are noticeably stronger than O/H111/H112. For design, use the certified values on the actual MTC, not website numbers.

6. Sizes and Tolerances
Common export sizes for 5083 plate include 1220 × 2440 mm (4 × 8 ft) and 1500 × 3000 / 1500 × 6000 mm, in thicknesses from about 2 mm up to 80 mm or more. Plate can be cut to custom width and length.
A typical order line: 5083-H112, ASTM B209, 20 × 1220 × 2440 mm, 15 pcs.
Dimensional tolerances (thickness, width, length, flatness) follow the permitted variations in ASTM B209 plus whatever you specify in the purchase order. If you need tight flatness or thickness for machining or laser cutting, tell us the values - we confirm before production, not after.
Heavy or wide plate: check with us on rolling capability and transport limits before you order, because width, thickness, and total bundle weight all affect production and shipping.
7. ASTM B209 or ASTM B928?
ASTM B209 is the general standard for aluminum sheet and plate. It covers chemistry, mechanical properties, and dimensional tolerances.
ASTM B928 is the specific standard for marine-grade 5083 plate (H116/H321). It adds requirements for corrosion resistance, edge condition, and product mark acceptance that general B209 plate does not cover.
If the plate goes into a boat hull or offshore structure, say ASTM B928 on the order. If it's for tanks, equipment, or general fabrication, ASTM B209 is enough.
8. Testing and Certification
Common inspection items for 5083 plate:
Chemical composition – verify the heat meets the alloy limits
Tensile test – tensile, yield, elongation
Bend test – only where your spec or the standard asks for it
Dimensional inspection – thickness, width, length, flatness, surface
Third-party inspection – SGS, BV, TUV, or your inspector, before shipment
Every shipment comes with an MTC covering alloy, temper, heat/lot number, chemistry, mechanical results, dimensions, and the applicable standard. Check it against your purchase order when the goods arrive.

9. Packaging for Export
5083 plate needs protection against scratching and moisture in sea freight. Standard export packing:
Interleaving paper or plastic film between plates
Waterproof outer wrap
Steel straps and pallets
Wooden crates or reinforced pallets for heavy bundles
Labels with alloy, temper, standard, size, and quantity
Where the order requires it, we pack per ASTM B660. Bundle weight is set so it can be handled with normal yard equipment at your port.

11. FAQ
Is 5083 the same as AlMg4.5Mn0.7?
Yes. 5083 is the US designation; AlMg4.5Mn0.7 is the European name for the same alloy.
Is 5083 heat-treatable?
No. It is strengthened by cold working, not by heat treatment.
H111 or H112 – which should I order?
For plate up to about 12 mm, H111 is the usual choice. For thicker plate, H112. Both are non-marine tempers. If the job is marine, use H116 or H321 per ASTM B928.
Is H112 available in thin plate?
Under ASTM B209, H112 for 5083 starts at about 6.3 mm. For thinner plate, use O or H111.
Does 5083 weld well?
Yes. It is one of the best aluminum alloys to weld, normally with 5356 filler. Remember welding softens the area near the weld - design for welded joints accordingly.
Can you supply with an MTC and third-party inspection?
Yes. MTC with every shipment, and SGS/BV/your inspector can be arranged before shipment if your order requires it.
What is the minimum order and lead time?
We confirm both in the quotation. Trial orders are possible for common sizes; standard export lead time for production plate is stated per order.
Conclusion
For 5083 aluminum plate, a clean purchase order names five things: alloy, temper, standard, dimensions, and documentation. "5083 aluminum plate" is not a full specification - "5083-H112, ASTM B209, 20 × 1220 × 2440 mm, 15 pcs, MTC" is.
When you are ready to buy, send your 5083 plate specification to GNEE for a quotation. We will confirm sizes, temper availability, and marine-grade requirements, and give you a clear price with lead time.
