What Is 7075-T6 Aluminum?

7075 aluminum alloy-widely known as aircraft aluminum or aerospace aluminum-uses zinc as its primary alloying element. It was the first high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy to successfully incorporate chromium, significantly enhancing resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, particularly in sheet products.

The typical chemical composition of 7075 aluminum includes 87.1–91.4% aluminum and 5–6% zinc, along with 2.1–2.9% magnesium, 1.2–2% copper, and no more than 0.5% combined silicon, titanium, chromium, iron, manganese, and other trace elements.

7075-T6 aluminum refers to 7075 alloy in the T6 temper, which is obtained through solution heat treatment, homogenization of the cast material at approximately 450°C for several hours, rapid quenching, and artificial aging at around 120°C for 24 hours. This controlled process enables the alloy to reach its maximum strength, fully meeting standard mechanical performance requirements.

Applications and Uses

Thanks to its outstanding property balance, 7075-T6 aluminum is suitable for a wide range of industries, while remaining a top choice for aerospace, marine, and transportation sectors due to its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Common applications include premium bicycle components, tooling, gliders, meter gears, fuse components, missile parts, worm gears, keys, and regulating valve components, as well as numerous aircraft fittings and aerospace and defense systems.

Conclusion

7075-T6 aluminum is a preferred material for aerospace, marine, and transportation applications where low weight and high resistance to stress are essential. At the same time, its well-balanced mechanical and physical properties make it highly popular across many other industries.

Key Applications Of 7075-T6 Plate

7075-T6 Aluminum Plates: Delivering Premium Strength for the UAE's Most Demanding Sectors

Standard aluminum alloys often fall short when extreme strength, superior fatigue resistance, and reliable long-term performance are required. For the defense, aerospace, and high-performance engineering sectors in the United Arab Emirates, 7075-T6 aluminum plate stands as the ultimate high-grade solution. This overview explains why 7075-T6 remains the benchmark for high-strength aluminum plate applications.

What Is 7075-T6 Aluminum Plate?

The Aerospace-Grade Benchmark

7075-T6 represents the pinnacle of high-strength aluminum alloys. As a member of the 7000 series (Al-Zn alloys), it delivers strength comparable to many steels while maintaining a much lower density. The T6 temper indicates that the material has been solution heat treated and artificially aged to achieve peak mechanical strength-making it the material of choice when failure is not an option.

7075-T6 vs. 6061-T6 vs. 6082-T6: Choosing the Right Alloy in the UAE

Compared with 6000-series alloys, 7075-T6 clearly dominates in strength, fatigue resistance, and machinability, while offering lower weldability and higher cost. It should be selected only when maximum mechanical performance is required and welding is not part of the design. It is not a general-purpose upgrade but a specialized high-performance solution.

Corrosion Resistance in the UAE Climate

Due to its copper content, 7075-T6 has lower inherent corrosion resistance than 6000-series alloys. In the UAE's hot, humid, and salt-rich environment, unprotected material is susceptible to pitting and exfoliation corrosion.

Protective finishing is essential, especially for outdoor or marine use:

Alodine (chromate conversion coating): Excellent corrosion protection and paint adhesion

Hard anodizing (Type III): Extremely hard, wear-resistant, and corrosion-proof surface

Powder coating: Thick, durable, and visually appealing protection

Professional aerospace-grade paint systems

Key Applications of 7075-T6 Plate in the UAE

Aerospace & Aviation: Wing spars, fuselage frames, landing gear components, and spacecraft parts in UAE MRO facilities

Defense & Military: Weapon mounts, recoil systems, tactical equipment, and armor solutions

High-Performance Automotive & Racing: Gearbox parts, shafts, suspension components, and chassis brackets

Precision Machinery & Tooling: High-stress jigs, fixtures, molds, and tooling components

Machining and Handling Guidelines

Machinability: 7075-T6 is one of the best aluminum alloys for machining, offering clean chip formation, tight tolerances, and excellent surface finish-ideal for precision workshops.

Welding: Welding is not recommended. Heat-affected zones experience strength loss and cracking; mechanical fastening is preferred.

Heat Treatment: Re-heat treatment can be performed by qualified suppliers if stress relief is required after machining.
