Recycling aluminum is both ecologically and economically transformative.
First, it saves 95% of energy versus primary production-melting scrap uses only 5–10% of the original energy.
Second, recycling reduces landfill waste, as aluminum takes 200–500 years to decompose and can leach toxins.
Third, it preserves finite resources; recycling 1 ton of aluminum saves 4 tons of bauxite.
Fourth, it slashes emissions: global recycling avoids 100+ million tons of CO₂ annually.
Fifth, recycled aluminum retains 100% material integrity, enabling infinite reuse in cars, cans, and construction. For example, 75% of U.S. aluminum ever produced is still in use, and a soda can be recycled and back on shelves in 60 days. However, improving global collection rates (currently ~70%) and reducing contamination (e.g., mixed-metal scrap) are critical to maximizing these benefits.
