Understanding the Difference Between 6061-T6 and 6061-T651 Aluminum
For machining, aerospace, structural, and general engineering applications, 6061 aluminum remains one of the most widely used and versatile alloys available. Still, many engineers and procurement teams often ask the same critical question: What sets 6061-T6 apart from 6061-T651?
Although both originate from the same 6061 base alloy, the difference lies in their stress-relief treatment and dimensional stability, which can greatly influence final part performance.
At GNEE, we believe in equipping our clients with clear and practical knowledge. This overview breaks down the distinctions between 6061-T6 and 6061-T651 to help you make informed material choices.
Understanding 6061 Aluminum Alloy
6061 aluminum is a precipitation-hardened alloy primarily composed of magnesium and silicon. It offers an excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance, workability, and weldability, making it suitable for a broad range of applications, including:
Structural parts
Aircraft and marine components
Automotive frames and wheels
CNC-machined parts
Heat sinks and electronic housings
What the Temper Designations T6 and T651 Mean
The "T" in T6 and T651 indicates the alloy has undergone thermal treatment to enhance hardness and strength.
T6 Temper
T6 means the material has been:
Solution heat-treated (heated to ~530°C to dissolve alloy elements)
Quenched (rapidly cooled to retain the elements in solid solution)
Artificially aged (~175°C) to allow precipitation and strengthen the alloy
T651 Temper
T651 follows the same steps as T6, but with one critical addition:
Stress-relief stretching:
After quenching and before aging, the material is stretched by approximately 1–3% to remove internal residual stresses caused during heat treatment.
This stretching step is what the "51" represents.
For extruded shapes, a similar stress-relief process may be referred to as T6511.
In short:
6061-T651 = 6061-T6 + mechanical stretching for stress relief, resulting in significantly better dimensional stability.
6061-T6 vs. 6061-T651: Direct Comparison
| Feature | 6061-T6 | 6061-T651 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat Treatment | Solution heat-treated & aged | Solution heat-treated, stretched & aged | "51" indicates stretching |
| Internal Stress | Higher | Much lower | Key differentiator |
| Dimensional Stability | Good | Excellent | T651 resists warping after machining |
| Machinability | Good | Excellent | More predictable machining, better surface finish |
| Tensile Strength | ≥ 290 MPa | ≥ 290 MPa | Essentially the same |
| Yield Strength | ≥ 241 MPa | ≥ 241 MPa | Slight variation possible due to stretching |
| Hardness | ~95 HB | ~95 HB | Nearly identical |
| Corrosion Resistance | Excellent | Excellent | No major differences |
| Weldability | Good | Good | Both weld well but HAZ is affected |
| Available Forms | Plate, sheet, tube, bar, extrusions | Mostly plate, bar, rod | T651 requires stretching capability |
| Cost | Standard | Slightly higher | Extra processing step adds cost |
Although their mechanical properties match closely, the stress-relief operation in T651 makes it significantly better for precision machining.
