6061 aluminum is widely used for the following applications:
It is easier to process and maintains excellent corrosion resistance even when the surface is abraded-unlike 2024, which typically requires a thin Alclad coating to remain corrosion-resistant.
Yacht construction, including small utility boats
Automotive components, such as the chassis of the Audi A8
Certain tactical flashlights
Aluminum cans for food and beverage packaging
6061-T6 is used for:
Bicycle frames and components
Many fly-fishing reels
The Pioneer plaque was produced using this alloy
Upper and lower receivers in many non-mil-spec AR-15 rifle variants
Aluminum docks and gangways, where 6061-T6 extrusions are commonly welded into place
Components for some ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) chambers
Numerous parts for remote-controlled model aircraft, especially helicopter rotor components
Secondary chambers and baffle systems in firearm sound suppressors (mainly pistol suppressors to reduce weight and improve mechanical performance), while primary expansion chambers generally require 17-4PH or 303 stainless steel or titanium
Features:
Excellent resistance to moisture and high strength relative to its lightweight construction.
GNEE provides 6061 and 6061-T6 aluminum products tailored for these applications, ensuring reliable performance and long-term durability.

6061 Aluminum Sheet & Plate provides an excellent balance of high strength, corrosion resistance, and machinability, making it the most widely used aluminum sheet and plate grade for diverse fabrication projects. As a general-purpose alloy, 6061 is heat-treatable, resistant to stress-related cracking, and easy to weld and machine, though its formability is somewhat limited. These qualities make GNEE 6061 Aluminum Sheet & Plate ideal for applications such as structural framing, base plates, gussets, as well as aircraft, marine, and automotive components.
Characteristics
6061 aluminum sheet is widely favored for its strength, lightweight nature, heat resistance, good formability, and strong corrosion resistance. It machines and welds easily and can be heat-treated without compromising strength. Compared with 6063, GNEE 6061 aluminum offers nearly double the strength. The alloy delivers an ultimate tensile strength of at least 42,000 psi (290 MPa) and a yield strength of at least 35,000 psi (241 MPa). Sheets 0.250 inch (6.35 mm) thick or less offer elongation of 8% or higher, while thicker sections offer about 10% elongation. The T651 temper provides similar mechanical performance. The alloy is non-magnetic with a Brinell hardness of 95.
FEATURES: Excellent moisture resistance and a strong strength-to-weight ratio.
WORKABILITY: Compatible with proper welding equipment and easy to drill, shear, machine, and form.
USES: Skinning frames, truck beds, toolboxes, trays, drip pans, ornamental products, and more.
ASTM Standard: ASTM B209-10 (Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Sheet and Plate)
Alloy Type: 6061-T651
Surface: Lightweight with a semi-smooth finish and dull mill appearance.
Applications
GNEE 6061 aluminum sheet is commonly used in machined parts and components for heat exchangers, pressure vessels, gussets, and various automotive sections. This alloy is strong, easily machinable, and highly weldable. The 6061-T651 Aluminum Sheet (ASTM B209, QQ-A-250/11) combines enhanced strength, corrosion resistance, and ease of machining, making it the most widely applied aluminum grade. It is heat-treatable, resists cracking from stress, welds and machines easily, though it offers limited formability. GNEE 6061 Aluminum Sheet is well-suited for structural framing, base plates, gussets, motorcycle parts, automotive components, and similar applications.
