7075 Aluminum Sheet Plate

7075 Aluminum Sheet Plate

The Al-Zn-Mg-Cu super duralumin alloy, which makes up 7075 aluminum sheet, is a cold-treated forging alloy that is much stronger and harder than soft steel. The 7075 aluminum alloy's tiny grain structure gives it superior deep drilling capabilities, improved tool wear resistance, high mechanical qualities, and anode response.

Export Control Notice - These Grades Cannot Be Exported

7075 aluminum - including forged 7075-T6 - falls within these categories and is not available for export.

High-strength aluminum alloys of this class are listed under the export control regulations of the People's Republic of China for dual-use items and technologies. Shipping them out of China requires an export licence issued by the competent Chinese authorities. In practice a licence is not obtained for ordinary commercial orders in these categories, so GNEE does not export them.

GNEE does not export to any party or destination prohibited under applicable export control and international sanctions laws.

Control status technically turns on six variables: alloy grade, temper, product form, dimensions, quantity and intended end-use. Whatever the combination, none of the grades in the table below are available for export from GNEE.

Aluminum grades affected by these controls

Alloy grade Common temper(s) Tensile strength (MPa) - reference
7075 T6 / T651 540 – 570
7075 T73 / T7351 485 – 500
7075 T76 / T7651 500 – 515
7050 T7451 / T6 475 – 620
2024 T351 / T4 425 – 470
7A04 T6 ≥ 530
2014 T6 approx. 460 – 500
2017 T4 approx. 390 – 480 (some specifications may reach higher)
2195 - approx. 572
7068 - approx. 623
7055 - approx. 654
7150 - approx. 643

Strength values in this table are indicative reference ranges used for control classification. They are not specification minimums. The governing limits for any enquiry come from the applicable standard or your drawing.

What we can quote instead

We cannot accept export enquiries for the grades listed above. If strength is the reason you are looking at them, send us the load case, the service environment and the fabrication method, and we will quote a non-controlled substitute - usually from the 5xxx or 6xxx series - with properties that fit the job and no export restriction attached.

Introduction of 7075 aluminum sheet and plate

7075 is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy in the 7xxx series, with zinc as the main alloying element and added magnesium and copper. In the T6/T651 tempers it reaches the highest strength levels of the common wrought aluminum alloys, with a strength-to-weight ratio close to that of many low-alloy steels.

7075 is supplied as both sheet (thin, rolled) and plate (thick, often stress-relieved). For plate the stress-relieved tempers T651, T7351 and T7451 are standard because they reduce residual stress and the risk of distortion during machining. The alloy machines well, but its corrosion resistance is lower than that of 5xxx or 6xxx alloys and its fusion weldability is poor - both points are covered in the fabrication section.

Mechanical properties of 7075 aluminum sheet and plate

Typical room-temperature values per ASTM B209. Values vary with thickness and temper; the figures below are representative for the stated product form. Confirm against the ordered thickness on the mill certificate.

Temper Product form Tensile strength Yield strength Elongation
O Sheet / plate 276 MPa (40 ksi) 145 MPa (21 ksi) 10%
T6 Sheet 538 MPa (78 ksi) 469 MPa (68 ksi) 7%
T651 Plate 538 MPa (78 ksi) 476 MPa (69 ksi) 7–9%
T7351 Plate 469 MPa (68 ksi) 400 MPa (58 ksi) 7–10%
T7451 Plate 503 MPa (73 ksi) 434 MPa (63 ksi) 8–10%

T7351 and T7451 trade a little tensile strength for much better resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, which is why they are preferred for thick plate in corrosive service.

Dimensional tolerances for 7075 aluminum plate

Tolerances follow ANSI H35.2(M). Because 7075 is an aerospace-grade alloy, plate is normally ordered to the tighter Table 3.1b limits; the values below are the commercial Table 3.1a reference for general plate (± mm). Tighter aerospace limits are quoted per purchase order.

Thickness (mm) Width ≤ 1000 mm Width 1000–2000 mm
0.40–0.63 ±0.040 ±0.06
1.00–1.20 ±0.06 ±0.09
3.20–4.00 ±0.14 ±0.18
6.30–8.00 ±0.30 ±0.36
10.00–16.00 ±0.56 ±0.56
25.00–40.00 ±1.00 ±1.20
60.00–80.00 ±1.90 ±2.20

Sheared width tolerance: ±2.5 mm up to 1000 mm wide, ±3 mm for 1000–2000 mm. Sheared length tolerance: ±2 mm up to 1000 mm, ±2.5 mm for 1000–2000 mm. Buyer-specified single-side tolerances are accepted and quoted case by case.

Applications of 7075 aluminum sheet and plate

7075 is chosen where the highest strength-to-weight ratio matters more than corrosion resistance or weldability:

Aerospace structures. Wing skins, spars, ribs, fuselage frames and bulkheads on commercial and military aircraft, where the high strength lets designers save weight.

Tooling, molds and fixtures. High-strength plates for injection molds, jigs, fixtures and precision machined parts that must hold tight tolerances.

Automotive performance parts. Chassis brackets, suspension arms and structural components on racing and high-performance vehicles where weight savings are critical.

Sporting and recreational equipment. Bicycle components, climbing hardware and other parts that benefit from low weight and high strength.

In corrosive or marine environments 7075 needs protective coating or cladding; specify T7351/T7451 and a surface treatment if the part sees sustained humidity or salt exposure.

Applications Of 7075 Aluminum Sheet And Plate

Machining and fabrication of 7075 aluminum

7075 machines cleanly at high speeds with standard carbide tooling and gives a good surface finish, which is why it is widely used for precision parts. It forms reasonably in the O temper but work-hardens in the T tempers, so forming is normally done before heat treatment.

Weldability is poor. Fusion welding (TIG/MIG) is not recommended because it weakens the joint and can cause hot cracking and loss of corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. Where joining is required, use rivets, bolts or other mechanical fasteners; resistance welding can work for some assemblies. For any structure that must be welded, discuss the service condition with our engineers before ordering.

Heat treatment follows the standard solution-treatment-and-aging route; the T73/T74 tempers use an over-aging step that improves stress-corrosion resistance at a small strength cost.

FAQ

What tempers are available for 7075 aluminum plate?

O, T6, T651, T7351 and T7451. For thick plate the stress-relieved tempers (T651, T7351, T7451) are standard because they reduce residual stress and machining distortion.

Is 7075 aluminum weldable?

Fusion welding is not recommended - it weakens the joint and can cause cracking and loss of corrosion resistance. Use mechanical fastening or, where suitable, resistance welding. For welded assemblies, review the service condition with our engineers first.

What is the typical lead time and MOQ?

Standard specifications ship in 15–30 days. Minimum order quantity is flexible; small trial orders are accepted and quoted on the same terms as large ones.

Can you provide a mill test certificate?

Yes. EN 10204 3.1 is supplied with every shipment. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party inspection can be arranged on request.

Is 7075 aluminum plate export-controlled?

7075 is on China's dual-use control list. As flat-rolled sheet and plate it passes first-round export screening and is exportable; this is a screening note, not a license determination, and we handle the export paperwork per order.

Which industries use 7075 aluminum?

Aerospace, tooling and mold making, automotive performance parts, and sporting goods - anywhere the highest strength-to-weight ratio is the priority.
