What is 6061-T6511 aluminum flat bar
6061 is a heat-treatable 6xxx-series alloy built around the magnesium–silicon (Mg₂Si) precipitation system. In the T6511 condition it delivers a practical balance of strength, weldability, machinability, and corrosion resistance at roughly one-third the weight of steel. The T6511 temper is specific to extruded bar, rod, and profiles: after aging, the section is stretched a small amount to remove residual stress, then lightly straightened. That stress relief is why 6061-T6511 is the default choice for CNC-machined parts that must hold tolerances after material is removed. The product is supplied to ASTM B221 and EN 755; it carries a mill finish and commercial straightness typical of extrusion, which is normal for structural and machined use.

Applications of 6061 aluminum flat bar
Structural framing and machine bases - jigs, fixtures, frames, and supports where flat, machinable stock is needed.
Automotive and trailer bodies - mounting rails, brackets, and sub-frames benefiting from low weight and weldability.
Marine and offshore fittings - deck hardware, railings, and brackets in non-continuous-immersion service.
Architectural and building components - trims, posts, and structural members with anodized or painted finish.
Electrical and electronic parts - heat sinks, enclosures, and busbar supports using 6061's thermal and electrical conductivity.
Railway and transport - interior structures and equipment mounts.
Furniture and fixtures - tables, frames, and display structures.
Screw-machine and CNC parts - precision components where T6511's stress relief keeps dimensions stable after machining.

Welding and fabrication of 6061 aluminum flat bar
Welding. 6061 welds readily by MIG and TIG. Use 4043 filler for general joints and 5356 where higher post-weld strength or marine service is required. Note that the heat-affected zone loses some strength relative to the T6 base; for designs needing full joint strength, plan the weld and consider 5356 or post-weld aging where the standard allows.
Forming and machining. The T6511 temper is stress-relieved, so the bar machines cleanly and holds dimension well in CNC work - this is its main advantage over untreated extruded stock. Cold bending and forming are limited in the aged condition; if tight radii are needed, form in O or T4 temper and then age to T6, or discuss the bend requirement with our engineers.
Corrosion care. 6061 has good general corrosion resistance. To avoid galvanic corrosion, do not place it in direct, moist contact with steel or copper without isolation, and prefer compatible fasteners. Anodizing or painting improves surface wear and appearance.

FAQ
Is 6061-T6511 aluminum flat bar weldable?
Yes. 6061 welds well by MIG and TIG using 4043 filler for general work or 5356 where higher joint strength or marine service is needed. The heat-affected zone is softer than the T6 base, so design joints with that in mind. Post-weld aging can recover some strength where the applicable standard permits it.
What sizes and tolerances does 6061 aluminum flat bar come in?
Common extruded stock runs from 3 mm to 50 mm thick and 12 mm to 300 mm wide, in lengths up to 6 m, with cross-section tolerances per ANSI H35.2 / ASTM B221 (for example ±0.20 mm on a 6–12 mm section, widening for larger sizes). Custom rectangles and tighter tolerances are produced to drawing.
What is the difference between 6061-T6511 and 6061-T6 aluminum flat bar?
T6511 is the extruded, stress-relieved-by-stretching temper used for rectangular bar made by extrusion. "T6" on a flat bar usually means the rectangle was cut from plate (T651) rather than extruded, or the bar was cold-finished. For machined parts that must stay flat and stable, extruded T6511 is the practical choice; for a tighter, plate-cut blank, a T651 plate-cut section may suit better. Tell us how you will machine and finish the part and we will recommend the right route.
