What is 6063 extruded structural aluminum pipe
6063 is often called the "architectural aluminum" alloy. Compared with 6061, it has slightly lower strength but far better extrudability and surface quality, which is why it dominates visible building and decorative structures. ASTM B429 / B429M is the specification for extruded structural aluminum pipe and tube - hollow sections produced by extrusion through a bridge or porthole die. In the T5 temper the section is cooled and artificially aged after extrusion; in the T6 temper it is solution heat treated then aged, giving higher strength. Both are used for structural and architectural service, but T6 is preferred where load or anodize color consistency is critical. For pressure-containing lines, seamless aluminum pipe to ASTM B241 is offered instead.
ASTM B429 scope and pressure limitation of 6063 aluminum pipe
ASTM B429 / B429M covers extruded structural aluminum pipe and tube for structural service - highway and bridge rails, chain-link fence posts, handrails, sign structures, awning supports, and light frames. By definition it is not intended for fluid-carrying applications involving pressure. If your line is pressurized (process piping, compressed air, hydraulics), specify seamless aluminum pipe and tube to ASTM B241 / B241M instead; for general-purpose drawn aluminum tube see ASTM B210, and for low-pressure general aluminum piping ASTM B483. Telling us the service condition up front lets us propose the correct product and avoid a misapplication.

Dimensions and tolerances of 6063 aluminum structural pipe
Common structural aluminum pipe is supplied in Schedule 40 sizes; the reference table below lists standard round sizes. Sizes outside this list and non-standard rectangles or squares are produced to your drawing.
| Nominal size | OD (mm) | Wall (mm) | ID (mm) | Theoretical weight (kg/m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 21.3 | 2.77 | 15.8 | 0.43 |
| 3/4" | 26.7 | 2.87 | 20.9 | 0.58 |
| 1" | 33.4 | 3.38 | 26.6 | 0.86 |
| 1-1/4" | 42.2 | 3.56 | 35.1 | 1.16 |
| 1-1/2" | 48.3 | 3.68 | 40.9 | 1.38 |
| 2" | 60.3 | 3.91 | 52.5 | 1.90 |
These are Schedule 40 dimensions given as a reference for structural aluminum pipe selection; theoretical weight is calculated at 2.70 g/cm³ and is a guide only. Dimensional tolerances follow ASTM B429 / EN 755: OD and wall are held to the standard's specified class, straightness and ovality are controlled for structural fit. Tolerances are confirmed against your drawing before production.
Roundness and concentricity. Structural aluminum pipe is supplied with controlled ovality (typically ≤ 1% of the outside diameter) and wall concentricity suitable for structural fit and fabrication. Seamless extruded sections typically hold wall variation around the circumference within about 5%, and drawn-over-mandrel (DOM) aluminum tube within about 2%; for a press fit into a header or a precision boss, state the concentricity you need rather than assuming the default. Exact roundness and concentricity limits are confirmed against ASTM B429 / ANSI H35.2 and your drawing.
Applications of 6063 aluminum structural pipe
Architectural railings and balustrades - handrails, balcony and stair rails where a smooth, anodized surface is required.
Window, door, and curtain-wall frames - tight extrusion detail and weather resistance for visible building envelopes.
Retail and display structures - shelves, signage frames, exhibition booths, and store fixtures.
Light structural frames and trusses - display rigs, stage elements, and equipment racks.
Furniture and fixtures - tables, chairs, and decorative tubular structures.
Transportation interiors - panels, racks, and trim where low weight and a clean finish matter.
Solar and green structures - support frames and mounting rails for photovoltaic arrays.

Surface finish and anodizing of 6063 aluminum pipe
The as-extruded mill finish is the default. Because 6063 anodizes to a uniform, bright film, the finish is often a larger part of the order value than the metal itself - so it is specified up front, not left open.
Mill finish: natural as-extruded surface; suitable where appearance is not critical.
Clear anodized: thin decorative film, typically AA10 (about 10 µm); for exterior architectural use specify AA20 (about 20 µm, Class I per AAMA 611).
Architectural anodized: AA15–AA25, color-stable across a full façade order; Class I per AAMA 611 for outdoor exposure.
Color anodized / powder coated: bronze, black, champagne, or any RAL color; coating 40–120 µm.
Brushed / polished: mechanical finishes for decorative tubular structures.
Anodizing and powder-coating costs are generally based on surface area rather than weight. For welded assemblies, plan the finish early: the weld zone can show a slight color difference from the parent metal after anodizing.

Welding and fabrication of 6063 aluminum pipe
Welding. 6063 welds readily by MIG and TIG. Use 4043 filler for general joints and 5356 where higher joint strength is needed. As with other 6xxx alloys, the heat-affected zone is softer than the T6 base, so size welds for the reduced local strength. After welding, anodizing may show a slight color difference between the weld and the parent metal - plan the finish accordingly for exposed architectural work.
Forming and machining. 6063 has good extrudability and fair machinability. Cold bending of T5/T6 aluminum pipe is limited; for tight radii, form in T4 (or O) temper and then age to T6, or discuss the bend requirement with our engineers. The smooth extruded surface takes anodizing and powder coating well without heavy pretreatment.
Corrosion care. 6063 has good atmospheric corrosion resistance and is suitable for outdoor architectural use. To avoid galvanic corrosion, isolate it from direct, moist contact with steel or copper using compatible fasteners or insulators.

FAQ
Is 6063 aluminum pipe weldable?
Yes. 6063 welds well by MIG and TIG using 4043 filler for general work or 5356 where higher joint strength is needed. The heat-affected zone is softer than the T6 base, so design joints with that in mind. If the aluminum pipe will be anodized after welding, expect a slight color difference at the weld and plan the finish accordingly.
What is the difference between 6063-T5 and T6 aluminum pipe?
Both are extruded structural tempers. T5 is cooled and artificially aged after extrusion; T6 is solution heat treated then aged, giving higher strength - roughly 205 MPa (30 ksi) UTS and 170 MPa (25 ksi) yield minimum versus 150 MPa (22 ksi) and 110 MPa (16 ksi) for T5. T6 also anodizes with more consistent color, which is why it is preferred for visible architectural work. Tell us the load and finish and we will recommend the right temper.
What sizes and schedules does 6063 aluminum structural pipe come in?
Standard extruded aluminum pipe covers OD 6–203 mm (1/4"–8") with wall 0.6–10 mm, in lengths 3–6 m, plus Schedule 40 sizes such as 1/2" through 2". Custom rounds, squares, rectangles, and tighter tolerances are produced to drawing; for pressure service, seamless aluminum pipe to ASTM B241 is available.
Is ASTM B429 6063 aluminum pipe rated for pressure?
No. ASTM B429 structural aluminum pipe and tube is defined for structural use only and is not intended for pressurized fluid service. For lines carrying pressure - process piping, compressed air, hydraulics - use seamless aluminum pipe and tube to ASTM B241 / B241M; for general-purpose drawn aluminum tube see ASTM B210, and for low-pressure general aluminum piping ASTM B483. Tell us the service condition and we will point you to the correct product.
